How many unwanted presents did you get this Christmas?
Dealing with unwanted presents
Most people don’t do anything! Three in five consumers hold onto gifts they don’t want, according to a survey from Kijiji.com, a free online classifieds site.
The top reasons are:
they don’t want to hurt the feelings of the giver (60 percent)
they think they will eventually use the gift (51 percent)
it’s too much effort to return them to the store (33 percent)
If you can get past these hesitations, here are five things to do with unwanted, ill-fitting holiday presents.
1. Use an unwanted gift card to buy a gift for someone else. Think ahead to any birthdays, parties, or celebrations coming up in the next six months. Anybody retiring? Getting married? Having a baby?
2. Re-gift! Sometimes you’ll come across an appropriate recipient a few days later at another holiday function, but more likely you’ll stash an unwanted gift in your gift closet (a designated area at home for evergreen gifts). Make sure you remove anything that would indicate the item was re-gifted and do not mention you are re-gifting to the recipient, which is extremely rude. Some people feel re-gifting is tacky, but I say it’s better to re-gift than let a present go to waste!
3. Sell gift cards you’re not going to use, especially if you think the store has a chance of closing. Here is the low-down on the best sites to sell gift cards. PlasticJungle.com, GiftCardRescue.com or GiftCardBuyBack.com
4. Exchange the gifts for something you want. If you don’t have a receipt, head to the store ASAP. Without a receipt, you’ll only get credit for the current selling price. Macy’s is one of the few stores that embeds the sale price in a bar code sticker so you can get credit for exactly what the giver paid. A lot of retailers softened their return policies to make it easier on us consumers and some are giving as much as a month after the holiday to return and/or exchange.
5. Sell presents online. Craigslist, Kijiji, eBay, Amazon. The Internet is your oyster.

More Frugal things you can do to celebrate Christmas
1. Make candy. Our favorites are fudge and peanut brittle.
2. Make a Paper Mache snowman.
3. Simmer some hot cider. Or if you’re lazy like me buy it at Trader Joes, or just heat up some bottled cider.
4. Have a birthday party for Jesus. Make a cake, invite the neighborhood kids over, and have a party. For gifts, you could give time or make a commitment to read your Bible, pray…whatever you can think of!
5. Watch the Christmas specials on TV. My personal favorites are Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and A Charlie Brown Christmas.
6. Send a card with a Christmas postmark to someone special. You can have letters postmarked at the North Pole, Bethlehem, Noel, and many more interesting places.
7. Read The Best Christmas Pageant Ever with your family. If you’ve never read it, you should. It’s really funny!
8. Hang mistletoe. Then kiss your sweetie.
9. Make your own Christmas cards. Have everyone pitch in. Family Fun has some good ideas.
10. Write a Christmas letter, with everyone in the family telling their own story of the past year. Our friends do this. They start the letter with “Dad’s Turn” and work their way down to the youngest child’s turn. It’s fun to read everyone’s differing perspective on the past year.
11. Make a video and send it to far away relatives for Christmas. We did this for years. We’d sing songs, tell stories, and just have a good time. Our relatives appreciated seeing how the kids had grown over the year.
12. Make Christmas ornaments.
13. Take a walk and collect pine-cones, acorns and the like for decorations.
14. Make an Advent Calendar. You could make a simple paper calendar. Or if you’re more crafty, you could make something more complicated. There are many options.
15. Make a Jesse Tree.
16. Fix a special Christmas breakfast. I usually make the Land of Nod Cinnamon Buns and Christmas Breakfast Sausage Casserole. I like these recipes, because the bulk of the preparation is done the day before.
17. Hold an open house. Send invites to all your friends, telling them to stop by your house between the hours of two and five. Set out simple finger foods, and enjoy socializing.
18. Take your family’s picture in front of the Christmas tree. Make it a yearly tradition.
19. Send a card to a recovering U.S. Soldier. The soldiers have given so much for us. Help make their holidays a bit brighter by thanking them. The address is: A Recovering American soldier, c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center, 6900 Georgia Avenue,NW,Washington,D.C. 20307-5001. Boomeyers, one of my commentators, has informed me that cards addressed to Any Soldier (as opposed to a real na me) will no longer be delivered due to security concerns. So I’m going to amend #48. Send a card to a U.S. soldier that you know. If you don’t know a U.S. soldier, consider making a donation to an organization that supports the troops. Or contact your local National Guard to see how you can help. Thanks, boomeyers, for correcting me.
20. Record your children singing their favorite Christmas carols. Children’s voices change so much over the years. Twenty years from now, you’ll be glad to have the recording.

Frugal things you can do to celebrate Christmas
Christmas is quickly approaching, and it’s time to start planning a frugal Christmas, to get less caught up in the urge to spend and put our focus where it belongs.
1. Read a Christmas story or book every day.
2. Celebrate Advent with an Advent Wreath. You can even make the wreath yourself. That’s more frugal than buying one..
3. Pray for people who send you Christmas Cards. A good time to do this is after dinner. Or pray for them during your advent time, if you’re using an advent calendar.
4. Attend the Crèche at the Orange Stake Center and your other Ward and Stake Christmas events.
5. Have a family slumber party in the living room. Pull out the sleeping bags and turn on the Christmas lights. Just enjoy being together as a family.
6. Go Christmas caroling. Grab some friends or just go as a family. Get to know your neighbors as you bless them with Christmas carols.
7. See the Christmas lights. Drive around your town and look at the decked out houses. Vote on which neighborhood has the best display.
8. Look at pictures from Christmas past. Pull out the photo albums. Tell your children about your Christmas celebrations as a child.
9. Do a Christmas puzzle together.
10. Bake Christmas cookies.
11. String popcorn.
12. Read the Christmas story. Read it straight out of the Bible, or use a bible storybook if you have young children.
13. Pick up some library books and study Christmas Traditions in other countries.
14. Make your own gifts. My personal favorites are gifts in a jar. Gift baskets are also fun. There are a ton of gift mixes at Food Gifts From Your Kitchen.
15. Participate in a charity. We like to fill shoe boxes for children the same ages as our children. Our children learn that Christmas is about giving, not getting.
16. Make paper snowflakes with your kids. If you want a real challenge, make a 3-D paper snowflake.
17. Make a paper chain to count down the days until Christmas. Alternate green and red construction paper. You can attach the chain to a paper cross or Christmas tree and hang it up on your child’s wall. Each night before bed take off a link. On Christmas Eve, the child takes off the last link, and then gets so excited that she can’t sleep. Oh wait…that happened to me. Hopefully it won’t happen to you. :)
18. Have a Christmas movie marathon. Get the movies from the library if you want to be really frugal. Some favorites are The Polar Express, Miracle on 34th Street, and A Christmas Story.
19. Invite some friends or family over for dinner. It doesn’t have to be formal. Just enjoy the company. Make it a potluck. Or have a soup night. Have everyone bring their favorite soup in a crock-pot.
20. Make a gingerbread house. You can try the ambitious way, or you can make one the easy way.
21. Visit a nursing home or an elderly shut in. The holidays can be a difficult time for those who have lost loved ones. Visit an elderly person with no family nearby. Bring some flowers, food, or a homemade Christmas card. It will brighten their day…and yours.
22. Attend your community tree-lighting ceremony. Many communities have them, and they are festive occasions. If you don’t mind the crowds, tree-lighting ceremonies can be a lot of fun.
23. Put on some Christmas music and dance with your spouse and children.
24. Learn the history of Santa. It’s pretty fascinating.
25. Track Santa on NORAD.

Yammy “Fries”
With yams and sweet potatoes on sale everywhere try these; Ingredients (serves 1-2)
1 large yam or sweet potato
1 teaspoon of cumin (optional)
1 tablespoon of oil
Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Peel yam and slice into 1/2 inch wide and an 2 inch long spears. Yam are sometimes difficult to slice, so don't worry if "fries" are uneven and broken. Spread out yam fries on a metal cookie sheet, ok if they touch, the heat will shrink them. Sprinkle with cumin, salt and pepper. Lastly drizzle with oil and cook for about 45 minutes. Turn once about half way through to brown fries on both sides. Sweet potatoes have more sugar so cooking time may be shorter; watch them carefully to prevent from burning black.

Let's Talk Turkey
What Kind of Turkey Should I Buy?
There are basically two types of raw birds to choose from…a pre-basted bird (typical ingredients include vegetable oil, broth and spices) or an un-basted bird to which nothing has been added. Personal preference usually dictates this choice. USDA Grade A is the highest quality grade for poultry and the one commonly found in grocery stores.
Is a Tom Better than A Hen?
Age not gender, is the determining factor for tenderness. All turkeys in the market are young, usually 4 – 6 months old. A hen usually weighs less than 16 pounds and a tom is usually over 16 pounds.
When Should I Buy the Turkey?
While the quality and the taste of frozen and fresh turkey are similar, The keeping time is not! A frozen turkey can be bought weeks or a month prior to the holiday, while a fresh bird should be purchased a day or two prior to cooking. Whenever possible, thaw your frozen turkey in the refrigerator. Count on 5 lbs. thawing each day, so a 15 pound turkey will take three days. Remember to place the turkey in a pan so that any juices won’t drip on other foods. If you don’t have that kind of space or time, thaw your bird in a cold water bath. A 15 pound turkey could take at least 8 hours this way. Please do not thaw poultry by leaving it at room temperature in your sink. This could allow unwanted bacteria a nice holiday home.
To prepare your turkey for roasting, always remove the giblets and the neck from the cavities. There are TWO cavities! Wash your bird in cold running water thoroughly, inside and out, then dry with a clean lint free towel. (Then wash the towel) If you are going to stuff the bird, pack the cavities loosely, as the stuffing will expand during the cooking process.
How much should I Buy?
3/4 of a pound of raw turkey per person will usually do the trick, however I recommend 1+ pound per person to allow for leftovers.
Is it Done? Thermometer Readings: Insert your instant read thermometer between the body and leg into the meaty part of the thigh. Look for a reading of 160 – 165 degrees. When you remove the thermometer, the juices should run clear. If you must test the turkey in the breast, which I don’t recommend, look for 160 – 165 degrees on a whole bird. Remember that the breast will be done before the thighs, so watch for this critical period in the cooking time. Pound per Minute Method:
All ovens cook differently, so these times are approximate. On an unstuffed turkey, figure 15 – 17 minutes per pound at 325 degrees. On a stuffed bird, figure 20 – 23 minutes per pound.
12-16 pounds…about 4 hours unstuffed
16-20 pounds…about 5 hours unstuffed
20-24 pounds…about 6 hours unstuffed
Resting Period:
Allow at least one minute per pound before carving. That turkey is still cooking when it first comes out of the oven.
Should I cook the turkey Up-Side-Down?
Pros: Your turkey breast will be moister and more flavorful this way, as the juices from the back cook down into your bird. This is better than having all the juices from your turkey adding flavor and moisture to the back bone!
Cons: If presentation is critical, this may not be your best choice as the turkey breast will not brown properly unless you have it on a rack. Turning a turkey while roasting is not recommended! Cooked turkeys explode when they hit your kitchen floor! Trust me I know, I found bits of turkey for weeks!

ALBERTSONS www.Albertsons.com
Oven French Toast
Make ahead and freeze for a quick home-made toaster breakfast before school or work
5 eggs
1 1/4 cups milk
1 1/2 Tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
16 slices bread (OR slice four 8-inch French rolls on the diagonal) Fresh French Bread 1.49 ea and Kaiser or Hoagie Rolls 2.39 a bag
Heat oven to 500°. Grease several baking sheets. In shallow dish, mix eggs, milk, sugar, and salt. Dip bread pieces in egg mixture and arrange on prepared baking sheets. Bake until underside is golden, about five minutes. Turn slices; bake until golden brown, about 2-5 minutes more. Watch them carefully to prevent burning. Serve with pancake syrup. (My kids and grandkids loved dipping food, kids will love these cut into strips so they can dip in syrup)
If preparing for the freezer, cool completely on wire rack. Place in a single layer on baking sheet and place in the freezer until firm, about 2 hours. Wrap, label, and return to freezer. When ready to serve, place in a 375° oven on ungreased baking sheet. Heat until hot, 8 to 10 minutes. You can simply pop smaller quantities into the toaster or toaster oven.

Messiah Sing Along - Sunday, November 29
The Yorba Linda Arts Alliance is holding their 6th annual Handel's Messiah Sing-Along at the Nixon Library and Museum on Sunday, November 29 at 1:00 pm and again at 3:30 pm. The admission is free, but donations are appreciated. It is a marvelous affair if you love to sing Handel during the Christmas season. Not to mention the venue, a replica of the White House East Room, is a stunning locale for such a lovely and spiritual event.

Even cheaper watch batteries!
I went to visit Susan Crosby today. I was going to take my watch to get a new battery and she told me about Time & Gold (across from Mother's Market), 216 E. 17th St. She said they charge $5. They've been running a special for the past several months and through November it's $4.50 for most watch batteries.

Saving money doesn't mean you have to sacrifice flavor
Plan ahead before you shop.
While it's tempting to run into the store on your way home to pick up food for that night's dinner, you'll save more money if you plan ahead. Plan the week's meals in the kitchen, so you can check the cabinets and the fridge to avoid buying duplicate items. Making a list – and sticking to it – will ensure that you'll have what you need on hand, and will help you avoid expensive "impulse" purchases. As you plan your meals, look for specials for the stores where you shop. Coupons can also keep costs down, but use them only on items you buy anyway. Those ten cans of lima beans might be on special, but they won't cut your costs if you can't get your six-year-old to eat them.
Reconsider convenience foods.
Compare the cost of convenience foods versus foods made from scratch. Pre-seasoned frozen vegetables, snack-sized packs and bakery sweets save a little time at home, but often cost much more than the ingredients they include. Homemade soups, for instance, cost a fraction of the canned version and are usually healthier. If you have a little time to invest in the kitchen, you could save big at the supermarket.
Keep your eye out for bargains at the store.
Once you've put together your list, you can still save money at the store with some smart shopping strategies.
In the produce section, stick to in-season fruits and vegetables. You'll get better prices – and flavor – on the frozen versions of the out-of-season produce on your list. In the deli, look for bargains on day-old breads and bakery products. Look for specials at the meat counter. Buy cuts of meat that are on sale and freeze the extras. Buy a whole chicken and chop it yourself to save a few more dollars at the store.
Let your leftovers do double-duty.
Using leftovers for another night's dinner or a quick lunch helps cut cooking time and foods costs. Use leftover pork butt in pulled pork sandwiches, or shred short ribs to serve with rice and beans. Serve half of a pork roast at dinner, then slice it up for sandwiches the next day. Tortillas are a great way to use up leftovers – you can fill them up with anything. You can even find ways to use food scraps. Use the bones from your roasted chicken for savory homemade chicken broth. Got some stale bread? Fry up a batch of croutons.
Make freezer-friendly foods in big batches.
When your schedule and food budget allows, take a day to make big batches of your go-to dishes. Cook up a big batch of meatballs or chili, then freeze it for later in the month. Freeze single-serving portions of soup for quick lunches. You can even freeze a dessert to pull out and bake when you're ready for something sweet.
Be creative with protein sources.
Try cooking cheaper cuts of meat. Tough, fatty cuts of meat like pork butt, pork spare ribs, beef short ribs and beef shoulder are inexpensive, and get fall-off-the-bone tender in a slow cooker. You can also cut down on costly meats in your meals, instead building your meal around brown rice, noodle, or other grains. Stir fries and pasta dishes are a great way build a tasty dish around with a small amount of meat, poultry or fish.
And don't forget about vegetarian protein sources, like beans, nuts, eggs and soy products. They're typically inexpensive, and provide many of the same nutrients.

FREE FROM DESERET BOOKS
From Anne Drage
I’m (John Hilton III) working on my doctorate degree and part of what I’m studying is what happens when books are made available for free.
I’ve been working with Deseret Book and they have made 8 of their books available for FREE DOWNLOAD at http://deseretbook. com/free. Several of the of the books are ones I thought you might be interested in. The books are:
1. Please Pass the Scripture (by me - John Hilton III).
2. What I Wish I Would Have Known When I Was Single (by John Bytheway).
3. Women at the Well (by Richard and Jeni Holzapfel).
4. Digging Deeper (by Robert Eaton).
5. 10 Secrets Wise Parents Know (by Brent Top and Bruce Chadwick).
6. Growing Up: Gospel Answers About Maturation and Sex (by Brad Wilcox).
7. Saving Kristen (by Jack Weyland). (fiction)
8. The Hidden Path (by C.B. Andersen). (fiction)
I’ve read part or all of all of these books and they are great. If nothing else, I recommend that you go download them all and save them for future reference as they will only be available online for free for a short time.
Could you forward this information on to others who might be interested? You could post it on Facebook too. I want to help share these great, free resources with as many people as possible. Some of the books help you get more out of the scriptures. Others are good for parenting. Some are just plain fun. Go check out http://deseretbook. com/free. I hope you like the books!

“Tips from Debbie”
Just when you thought could not possibly find another use for baking soda ………. Cleaning Silver-Make a paste:3 parts baking soda,1 part water. Rub paste on silver with a clean cloth or sponge. Rinse off paste thoroughly then dry pieces. Works on sterling, silver-plate and stainless steel.
Microwave Mop-up- Wipe down the inside of your microwave with a clean, damp sponge sprinkled with baking soda. Rinse wipe with water. Freshens the place up! You can also clean the outside of the microwave with this method.
Prep Area Wipe-down- Before preparing foods, clean the prep area by sprinkling baking soda on a clean, damp sponge (or cloth). Scrub down cutting boards, counter tops, stainless steal sinks and more. Baking soda is a natural, food-safe cleaner and a good choice for cleaning surfaces that come in contact with food.
Safely Clean Toys- Fill a sink or bucket with 1 quart warm water and stir in 4 tablespoons of baking soda until dissolved. Wash toys using a clean, damp sponge or cloth, rinse, then dry. Cleans and deodorizes toys effectively without using harsh chemicals.
Grill Scrub- Clean grimy grills by sprinkling baking soda on a damp grill brush then start scrubbing. For extra nasty grills, make a paste of 3 parts baking soda and 1 part water–then scrub paste all over the grill with a damp brush.
Car Cleaner- No worries about scratches, clean car lights, chrome, windows, tires, vinyl seats, floor mats and ash trays. Use a baking soda solution of 1/4 cup baking soda in 1 quart of warm water. Apply with a sponge or soft cloth to remove road grime, tree sap, bugs, and tar. For stubborn stains use baking soda sprinkled on a damp sponge or soft brush.
Garbage Can Freshener- Sprinkle baking soda between layers of garbage as it grows to keep stinky smells from growing strong. Periodically wash out the garbage pail with 1 cup of baking soda per 1 gallon of water

What is a good deal?
I have heard this question many times! In our grocery ads I try to point out what I think is a good deal by putting an * next to the item. Well, here is a general guide to use while shopping. Anything that is advertised at the lower price or less is a great deal, so stock up at the low price. The higher “to” price is still an OK deal, buy only what you need. Otherwise wait.
