Museums Free for All 22 Los Angeles and Orange County MuseumsFree Admission Days October 3 and/or 4, 2009 In a joint effort to present the arts and culture to the diverse and myriad communities in Southern California, the Museum Marketing Roundtable announces the fifth annual ‘Museums Free-For-All’ Saturday-Sunday, October 3 and 4, 2009
Powdered Laundry Detergent- Top load machine
1 Ivory soap bar, 1 Cup Washing Soda and ½ Cup Borax
Grate soap or break into pieces and process in a food processor until powdered. Mix all ingredients. For light load, use 1 Tablespoon. For heavy or heavily soiled load, use 2 Tablespoons. Yields: 3 Cups detergent. (Approx. 40 loads) I don't remember the exact cost for those, but the recipe ran at around $1.89 for 40 loads which was great! Ivory soap came in at $4.49 (or 45 cents per bar!). I found all of the ingredients in the laundry soap aisle. I also nabbed this 1 gallon apothecary jar for $12.79 from my local grocery store. If yours doesn't carry these, I believe I've seen some for cheap at Michaels, and Cost Plus World Market.I grated the Ivory soap with a cheese grater and then mixed all the ingredients in a bowl to make sure they were evenly distributed before adding them to my jar. I don't know what it is about these glass jars, but they make me really happy and I feel like royalty while doing laundry (err... I guess royalty would have maids?). And I love how it looks sitting next to my freshly painted laundry basket!
This 1 gallon jar holds 5 batches, or enough powdered soap to do approximately 200 loads of laundry! And the best part? This new 40-load recipe cost me only $1.09! Now that is a money saver!

One more laundry tip: This one is from Jani Judge. Jani always adds 1 cup (¼ to ½ cup works too) of baking soda to every load of wash. She says it freshens and removes the “yuck” from your laundry! Lani adds: If you do this you can use half the required laundry detergent. Purchase a large bag of baking soda, and it lasts a long time. It’s much cheaper than the detergent. Baking soda is great for laundry, toilets, and countless other cleaning/sanitizing jobs. Soak dirty pots and pans in it.
!

Buttermilk Syrup“This is a great homemade syrup that would be wonderful on your “General Conference” pancakes or waffles! To make them EXTRA special top with fresh berries, bananas, nuts, coconut, pineapple, whipped cream, or all of the above! Now we’re talkin’ sugar coma!
INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 cups white sugar3/4 cup buttermilk1/2 cup butter2 tablespoons corn syrup1 teaspoon baking soda2 teaspoons vanilla extract
DIRECTIONSIn a saucepan, stir together the sugar, buttermilk, butter, corn syrup, and baking soda. Bring to a boil, and cook for 7 minutes. Remove from the heat, and stir in the vanilla.

· This tip is from Maggie Bartlett, she is in the Costa Mesa II ward. I don't know if you have ever gone to the Grocery Outlet. It is located on Magnolia off the 405 freeway. They have wonderful bargains!!! But, I have never seen any advertisement for them. Their produce is nothing but things like frozen chicken breasts (I bought a 4 lb bag of Italian seasoned for $1.99) and a box of chicken corn dogs for $3.99, Tyson frozen chicken strips $3.99 (like you get at Costco). refrigerated cookie dough $.99. the only thing is sometimes you can go back and not find what you bought before! but the bargains are there too.

Natural Korean Meat Tenderizers
These three Fruits are great for tenderizing those inexpensive cuts of meat.
PineapplePearsPapayaMake thin slices of these ingredients, or blend the fruit from a canned product. Put the fruit on the meat you want to tenderize. Warning: Pineapple will literally turn raw meat into baby food. So be careful how long you soak in the pineapple. Not over night!

With apples on sale (.49lb at Albertsons and.50lb at Henry’s) Here are 3 more easy recipes using the ever favorite apple. The best “tart” apple is the Granny Smith, but experiment! I think all types of apples are good in salads. I especially love the Fuji, which is definitely not a tart apple.

Autumn Apple Salad I
Ingredients
1 (10 ounce) package mixed salad greens
1/2 cup slivered almonds
1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
1 cup tart apple, cored and chopped
1/4 cup sliced red onion
1/4 cup golden raisins
1 cup raspberry vinaigrette salad dressing

Autumn Apple Salad II
Ingredients
4 tart green apples, cored and chopped
1/4 cup blanched slivered almonds, toasted
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1/4 cup chopped dried cherries (can use all cranberries)
1 (8 ounce) container vanilla yogurt

*Grilled Apple and Brie Quesadilla*
Annie Morgan serves, at her restaurant “Taste Buds”, a brie and apple sandwich on a toasted baguette, one of my favorites! This would be a great at home alternative.

Ingredients
1/4 cup cream cheese, 8 soft taco size flour tortillas, 1/2 pound brie (may use a favorite cheese to substitute), cut into thin strips, 1 apple sliced thin

Preheat grill pan over medium heat. Spray pan with nonstick spray when ready to start cooking. Spread the cream cheese evenly over 4 of the tortillas. Evenly divide Brie strips on top of the cream cheese. Divide apple slices on top of Brie.
Place remaining tortillas on top to make 4 quesadillas.
Place each quesadilla on grill pan and grill 3 minutes per side or until tortilla is browned with grill marks. Use spatula to flip tortilla. Once grilled, remove from heat and let cool for about 2 minutes before slicing. The whole family will love this one.

Rice is Nice
A pound of dry white rice costs between 3 to 6¢ per serving and can be easily added to casseroles, soup, and stews. I just looked at the Nutrition Label on my cheap white rice and I discovered that a 1/4 cup of rice has no fat, 3 g of protein and lots of B vitamins. So here are a bunch of speedy recipes which take only about as long as it takes to cook your rice. They are tasty, healthy, quick, and inexpensive.
If you enjoy rice pilaf, making it from scratch takes as much time as making a prepackaged Rice Dish, but for one third the cost. Steamed rice is great with stir fried veggies and meat tips, and can be used to make rice pudding.Curried Rice: My favorite! With your boiling or steaming rice, add a few sliced scallions, pea pods and baby carrots if you have any or all of them; skip if you don't. Season with a few tablespoons of grated ginger root or one tbsp. of ground ginger, two teaspoons of curry powder and a little salt. Fried Rice: Cook some rice with baby carrots. Add fresh mushrooms toward the end. Optional: Cut up some partially thawed chicken breast and sauté in butter or oil and garlic. When chicken is no longer pink, pour and simmer in some chicken broth, chopped onions or scallions with the chicken. Crack two eggs in and stir and cook until they are 'stringy'. Blend with cooked rice mixture. Season with soy sauce. You can skip the chicken and simply simmer the chicken broth with mushrooms.Spanish rice: Very Easy! Mix your favorite salsa in with cooked rice. I told you it was easy. Sprinkle some shredded cheese and microwave if you need more protein another step!Divine rice: When you make the rice, use a package of French onion soup mix in the water. When the rice is cooked, add a can of mushroom soup. This is great with pork chops or chicken legs and thighs. Rinse the meat and add a few cups of water and 1 cup of uncooked rice. I add 1-2 cans of cream soup depending on the amount of meat. I sprinkle on one envelope of onion soup mix and bake for about 1-2 hours at 325 to 350 degrees.

Bargains for September 16, 2009

Someone jokingly asked me “Hey, what about the 99 cent Store” bargains? Well, I started thinking, what about the 99 cent Store! They do have a lot of JUNK, but they also have some great bargains for the savvy shopper. I say it is worth a check.
Here are 2 recipes made with the majority of the ingredients purchased at the 99 cent Only Store.

This first recipe is Black Bean & Corn Salad and is one quick, cheap and filling veggie accompaniment. Pull out this recipe for your next barbecue -- it pairs well with chicken and fish.

Ingredients (about 4 servings)Black Beans - large 1 1/2 lb. or 2 1/2 cups, rinsed and drained.Corn - Two 8 oz. cans or 2 cups, drained.1 cup chopped bell pepper - red, yellow or green (optional) Add chilies if you would like a little extra spice
1 cup chopped onion - red, white or yellow (optional)2 tbsp. olive oil - optional2 tbsp. lemon or lime juice - fresh squeezed or bottled, ok to substitute vinegar.Salt and pepper to taste.
Directions: Drain and rinse canned black beans, then place in a large bowl. Add drained corn. Chop bell pepper and onion. Mix into bowl of black beans and corn. Finally, blend in olive oil and lime or lemon juice. Salt and pepper to taste. Allow to sit for half an hour to marinate at room temperature. Serve with tortilla chips or just as a side for your party!

All manner of cheeses are found in the 99c only Store. California Monterey Jack, European Swiss, Netherlands Tilberg, Austrian "Alps," American style cheddar and mozzarella have been found in the deli cold case. The second recipe is a 3 Cheese Macaroni
Ingredients: 16 oz. package 99 cent elbow macaroni (substitute rigatoni or penne tube pasta to impress)8 oz. each of 99 cent cheddar, swiss, and mozzarella (or any type you can find)2 tablespoons flour2 1/2 cups milk (whole or 2%)1/2 cup pasta water (starchy water left over from cooking pasta)1 tbsp. Dijon mustard or 1 tsp. of dried mustardsalt and pepper to taste (cheese has some salt already)Extra ingredient -- top with one cup of 99cent bread crumbsDirections: Set aside about a 1/2 cup of extra cheese as topping. In a pot, heat flour and slowly whisk in milk then add cheese, stirring until melted, about 15 minutes. In another pot, boil macaroni 5-8 minutes until al dente; drain and set aside. In a large casserole dish mix macaroni and melted cheese mixture and sprinkle extra cheese over dish. Bake uncovered for 20 - 30 minutes at 350 degrees until top is golden brown (cooked covered half the time for a more creamy version). Remove from oven when done and allow to stand for 5 minutes as sauce thickens. *If too dry, make a split down the middle and pour in a 1/4 to 1/2 cup of milk.

Family Fun
Orange County just incorporated a new city Sunday--a child's dream town. Children can unleash their imaginations at Pretend City in Irvine by building a fort at the Construction Site, painting a masterpiece in the Art Studio, cooking in the kitchen at the Pretend Café, or building sandcastles at the Beach.
Pretend City is an incredibly cool, interactive children's museum created to build better brains through whole body learning experiences, educational programs and creative exhibits.
The museum, near the Irvine Spectrum, Verizon Amphitheater and Wild Rivers, is geared for children from infants to 8 years old and their families. The city set-up comes complete with a grocery store, farm, doctor's office, art studio, amphitheater, beach, marina, and many other exhibits. 29 Hubble in Irvine. 949.428.3900.

Grocery Savings Tip #1 Generic Isn't Always Cheaper! You've heard of “Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price?” It is so named because stores can change the sale price of items to accommodate special promotions and the needs of their customers. While it is common to see generics go on sale, many of the loss-leaders featured in sale ads occur for brand name items only. The store may not make any money on these products, but you can snag your favorite brands for far below even generic pricing. Add a coupon and watch your price go even lower.
Grocery Savings Tip #2 Remember That Size Matters.Stores can place two like items next to one another on the store shelf and make you think they are exactly the same size (especially if they are packaged similarly). But that doesn't mean they are. If you are comparing a generic with a brand name, however, chances are good that they aren’t exactly the same volume or weight. Customers who look at price alone (and don’t figure out how much you are paying per ounce, for example) may not be getting the best deal by buying that seemingly lower-priced item.
