The Yorba Linda Arts Alliance is holding their 6th annual Handel's Messiah Sing-Along at the Nixon Library and Museum on Sunday, November 29 at 1:00 pm and again at 3:30 pm. The admission is free, but donations are appreciated. It is a marvelous affair if you love to sing Handel during the Christmas season. Not to mention the venue, a replica of the White House East Room, is a stunning locale for such a lovely and spiritual event.
Here is their website: http://www.messiahsing.org/

Even cheaper watch batteries!
I went to visit Susan Crosby today. I was going to take my watch to get a new battery and she told me about Time & Gold (across from Mother's Market), 216 E. 17th St. She said they charge $5. They've been running a special for the past several months and through November it's $4.50 for most watch batteries.

Saving money doesn't mean you have to sacrifice flavor
Plan ahead before you shop.
While it's tempting to run into the store on your way home to pick up food for that night's dinner, you'll save more money if you plan ahead. Plan the week's meals in the kitchen, so you can check the cabinets and the fridge to avoid buying duplicate items. Making a list – and sticking to it – will ensure that you'll have what you need on hand, and will help you avoid expensive "impulse" purchases. As you plan your meals, look for specials for the stores where you shop. Coupons can also keep costs down, but use them only on items you buy anyway. Those ten cans of lima beans might be on special, but they won't cut your costs if you can't get your six-year-old to eat them.
Reconsider convenience foods.
Compare the cost of convenience foods versus foods made from scratch. Pre-seasoned frozen vegetables, snack-sized packs and bakery sweets save a little time at home, but often cost much more than the ingredients they include. Homemade soups, for instance, cost a fraction of the canned version and are usually healthier. If you have a little time to invest in the kitchen, you could save big at the supermarket.
Keep your eye out for bargains at the store.
Once you've put together your list, you can still save money at the store with some smart shopping strategies.
In the produce section, stick to in-season fruits and vegetables. You'll get better prices – and flavor – on the frozen versions of the out-of-season produce on your list. In the deli, look for bargains on day-old breads and bakery products. Look for specials at the meat counter. Buy cuts of meat that are on sale and freeze the extras. Buy a whole chicken and chop it yourself to save a few more dollars at the store.
Let your leftovers do double-duty.
Using leftovers for another night's dinner or a quick lunch helps cut cooking time and foods costs. Use leftover pork butt in pulled pork sandwiches, or shred short ribs to serve with rice and beans. Serve half of a pork roast at dinner, then slice it up for sandwiches the next day. Tortillas are a great way to use up leftovers – you can fill them up with anything. You can even find ways to use food scraps. Use the bones from your roasted chicken for savory homemade chicken broth. Got some stale bread? Fry up a batch of croutons.
Make freezer-friendly foods in big batches.
When your schedule and food budget allows, take a day to make big batches of your go-to dishes. Cook up a big batch of meatballs or chili, then freeze it for later in the month. Freeze single-serving portions of soup for quick lunches. You can even freeze a dessert to pull out and bake when you're ready for something sweet.
Be creative with protein sources.
Try cooking cheaper cuts of meat. Tough, fatty cuts of meat like pork butt, pork spare ribs, beef short ribs and beef shoulder are inexpensive, and get fall-off-the-bone tender in a slow cooker. You can also cut down on costly meats in your meals, instead building your meal around brown rice, noodle, or other grains. Stir fries and pasta dishes are a great way build a tasty dish around with a small amount of meat, poultry or fish.
And don't forget about vegetarian protein sources, like beans, nuts, eggs and soy products. They're typically inexpensive, and provide many of the same nutrients.

FREE FROM DESERET BOOKS
From Anne Drage
I’m (John Hilton III) working on my doctorate degree and part of what I’m studying is what happens when books are made available for free.
I’ve been working with Deseret Book and they have made 8 of their books available for FREE DOWNLOAD at http://deseretbook. com/free. Several of the of the books are ones I thought you might be interested in. The books are:
1. Please Pass the Scripture (by me - John Hilton III).
2. What I Wish I Would Have Known When I Was Single (by John Bytheway).
3. Women at the Well (by Richard and Jeni Holzapfel).
4. Digging Deeper (by Robert Eaton).
5. 10 Secrets Wise Parents Know (by Brent Top and Bruce Chadwick).
6. Growing Up: Gospel Answers About Maturation and Sex (by Brad Wilcox).
7. Saving Kristen (by Jack Weyland). (fiction)
8. The Hidden Path (by C.B. Andersen). (fiction)
I’ve read part or all of all of these books and they are great. If nothing else, I recommend that you go download them all and save them for future reference as they will only be available online for free for a short time.
Could you forward this information on to others who might be interested? You could post it on Facebook too. I want to help share these great, free resources with as many people as possible. Some of the books help you get more out of the scriptures. Others are good for parenting. Some are just plain fun. Go check out http://deseretbook. com/free. I hope you like the books!

Just when you thought could not possibly find another use for baking soda ………. Cleaning Silver-Make a paste:3 parts baking soda,1 part water. Rub paste on silver with a clean cloth or sponge. Rinse off paste thoroughly then dry pieces. Works on sterling, silver-plate and stainless steel.
Microwave Mop-up- Wipe down the inside of your microwave with a clean, damp sponge sprinkled with baking soda. Rinse wipe with water. Freshens the place up! You can also clean the outside of the microwave with this method.
Prep Area Wipe-down- Before preparing foods, clean the prep area by sprinkling baking soda on a clean, damp sponge (or cloth). Scrub down cutting boards, counter tops, stainless steal sinks and more. Baking soda is a natural, food-safe cleaner and a good choice for cleaning surfaces that come in contact with food.
Safely Clean Toys- Fill a sink or bucket with 1 quart warm water and stir in 4 tablespoons of baking soda until dissolved. Wash toys using a clean, damp sponge or cloth, rinse, then dry. Cleans and deodorizes toys effectively without using harsh chemicals.
Grill Scrub- Clean grimy grills by sprinkling baking soda on a damp grill brush then start scrubbing. For extra nasty grills, make a paste of 3 parts baking soda and 1 part water–then scrub paste all over the grill with a damp brush.
Car Cleaner- No worries about scratches, clean car lights, chrome, windows, tires, vinyl seats, floor mats and ash trays. Use a baking soda solution of 1/4 cup baking soda in 1 quart of warm water. Apply with a sponge or soft cloth to remove road grime, tree sap, bugs, and tar. For stubborn stains use baking soda sprinkled on a damp sponge or soft brush.
Garbage Can Freshener- Sprinkle baking soda between layers of garbage as it grows to keep stinky smells from growing strong. Periodically wash out the garbage pail with 1 cup of baking soda per 1 gallon of water

What is a good deal?
I have heard this question many times! In our grocery ads I try to point out what I think is a good deal by putting an * next to the item. Well, here is a general guide to use while shopping. Anything that is advertised at the lower price or less is a great deal, so stock up at the low price. The higher “to” price is still an OK deal, buy only what you need. Otherwise wait.

Money Saving Tips

Uses for aluminum foil
• When scissors get dull, layer about 7 pieces of foil and cut through them, and the scissors are sharp once again.
• Put jewelry in aluminum foil and put in some salt solution and leave it overnight. The next morning they look like new.
• To soften the brown sugar, wrap it in foil and bake it in a 300 degree oven for 5 minutes.
• Ball up some foil and use it to clean the gunk off your grill or pots and pans. It cleans just as well as a wire scrub brush or a steel wool scrub pad.
• Makes great gift wrapping paper.
• Half way through the baking process, take a length of foil and wrap around the edge of your pie, securing with a metal paper clip. This will prevent your crust from browning too much.
• Put a length of foil on your oven rack to catch spills from pizzas or whatever makes a mess in your sparkly clean oven. Make sure to spray the foil with a little cooking oil.
• Place a layer of aluminum foil on the ironing board under your cloth cover. This essentially doubles your heat, therefore halving your ironing work. This will also work great if you have delicates that can’t come in direct contact with the iron. Simply hold the iron a couple inches above your garment and let the foil get warm underneath. Since it doesn’t come in direct contact with the garment,
Removing stubborn stickers on items
So the other day, when I purchased some lovely summery glass vases, I was frustrated when those stubborn stickers wouldn’t unstick themselves from the pretty bottoms. I reached for my trusty Goo-Be-Gone, and Goo! It was gone!
I figured there had to be some solution out there, so after a quick Google search (what did we do before you, beloved Google?) I found out that good ol’ olive oil (or veggie or whatever kind of oil you’ve got in the pantry) will do the same task. Lo and behold, the stickers came off smooth as can be! Guess I don’t need Goo-Be-Gone after all. Make sure to rinse off the now slippery surface with lots of soap and water (or run it through the dishwasher, if appropriate).

Just in time for the "Trunk or Treat"
Ten Thrift Store Halloween Costume Ideas
Thrift stores are the perfect place to buy clothing for Halloween costumes. The prices are affordable and the selection usually wide enough for bountiful creativity. Some thrift stores carry Halloween accessories as well, so you may pick up everything you need for the following costumes in one quick, economical shopping trip.
Titanic Survivor
Pin plastic seaweed and fake aquarium plants to your clothes and wear long strands in your hair. Shred the arms and pockets of an old shirt, overlay with a shredded vest and wear over tattered trousers or a long skirt with a torn hem. Wet look fabric is a bonus. Make a long necklace or belt from a thick length of hemp rope; unravel the rope ends for best effect, and attach a toy sailboat. Hot glue polished pennies or fake gold coins (bags of gold chocolate coins are great) in strategic places. A fake fish or two sticking out of a pocket completes the ensemble.
Bee Movie Star
Make bee antenna by hot gluing small black pom poms to black chenille stems, then hot glue the antenna to a black head band. Wear a yellow top with black tights or leggings; padding the top is optional, but you'll need to add stripes with black tape. If you're going all out, paint your face yellow with large black circles around your eyes.
Bee Keeper
Dress in khaki clothing and a wide brimmed hat. Attach netting around the hat brim. Glue fake bees all over the hat and clothes. If you have children accompanying you, dress them as bees.
Pest Exterminator
Wear old clothes and a wide brimmed hat with netting around the brim. Glue fake bugs, spiders, mice and rats to the clothes and hat; if desired, add a mousetrap complete with a fake trapped mouse. Carry a net.
Hershey's Kiss
Start with a long, baggy sweat shirt with a ribbed hem that pulls in fairly tightly around the bottom of your hips. Pad the shirt in the shape of a Hershey's kiss and cover with strips of aluminum foil tucked in and stapled or glued at the hem and neck. For a French Kiss, add a French beret.
Toy Story Woody
A yellow, or yellow-plaid shirt, overlaid by a black-and-white cow patterned vest, is the signature look for this Toy Story cowboy. Buy a short black or white vest and paint on contrasting patches in a random black-and-white pattern; wear over a yellow shirt. Add bright blue jeans or blue pants, thrift store western-style cowboy boots, and a brown or red straw cowboy-style hat. Tie a red bandanna around your neck, and add a western style belt or toy gun holster.
Alice in Wonderland
For Alice, you will need a light blue dress with a full skirt, overlaid with a white apron. Wear an extra large black bow in your hair and white ankle socks with black shoes.
Mad Hatter
Make or buy a top hat for the Mad Hatter, then attach a playing card to the hat brim. Buy a long, pocketed jacket at the thrift store - in plaid, or the brightest color you can find, and a vest in a contrasting color. Make a huge bow tie from a rectangle of bright patterned fabric cinched together in the middle and wear it around your neck.
Gulliver and Lilliputians
Buy a white, ruffled shirt with long, full sleeves. Cut long pant legs off six inches below the knee; cinch just below the knee with a circle of elastic. Wear long white knee socks, overlapped by the knee breeches. Make old-fashioned shoe buckles by cutting out two rectangles of cardboard with two rectangular holes inside; cover with gold foil or paint gold. Finally, run thin rope over your shoulders and around your middle; attach small doll figures to the rope as Lilliputians trying to tie you down.
Dog's Dinner
This one doesn't require any shopping at all - you just need a very large, empty dog food bag. These come in jumbo sizes to fit an adult; smaller sizes would work for children. Wear a brown or black track suit. The top of the bag will probably be cut right across; if not, cut a straight line as close to the top as possible. Cut leg holes in the bottom of the bag. Make suspenders to go over your shoulders from transparent tape or ribbon. Hot glue the suspenders to the top of the bag. Wear a couple of bone shaped cookies in your hair

• A couple of weeks ago you sent information about the ‘Treasure Box’. Where you order $30 worth of food at the beginning of the month and about 2 weeks later on a Saturday morning you pick up abut $120 worth of frozen food. Well I tried it out and it is amazing! I was busy, so I sent my husband to pick it up. He said it was very slick, he drove up, showed them his receipt and they put a big box in his trunk and he drove away! It is so great that we are going to order 2 this month. 1 box will easily feed a family for a week, but since we only have our kids on the weekends, 2 should be plenty for the month. We only have to fill in with bread, milk and fresh produce (see below for my fresh produce bargains).
The food is name brand
It is all very good
It is normal stuff we eat, (except the really big apple pie! It was way above normal!)
Anyone can take advantage of this service (not just poor people, or if you’re having a hard time, or without a job) (watch the video on the bottom right of the website home page.)
There are pick-up locations all around the county
The order/pick-up schedule for the next couple of months.

FRESH PRODUCE:
El Metate market 817 W 19th St ,Costa Mesa , (949) 646-9362
on 19th street in Costa Mesa has the best produce prices in town! Yeah, I know, everyone loves Henry’s, but they just have a couple of things on sale to get you in there and the rest is fairly over priced. But at El Metate their prices are always low and when they have a sale you feel like you are stealing the stuff. Last week I bought, 3 kinds of lettuce, celery, cabbage, carrots, green onions, brown onions, bananas, a pineapple and a couple of potatoes all for under $8.00. They had watermelon on sale a couple of weeks ago, a really big one (almost 10 lbs) cost me $1.79, not per pound, for the entire thing!
So, combine the savings of the Treasure Box, with the great deals at El Metate we are reducing our food bill by 2/3rds!

Tips for 10-7-09
Things I learned from my Mother by Lani
When I was a kid my mom loved to dye things to make them “new again”, she even attempted to dye a hand made 8x10 rug that my father brought home from Japan. Her “color” was green and the beautiful blue and white Oriental rug wasn’t green! Well that was a true tragedy. I still think about it even after almost 50 years and can see her on her hands and knees in the driveway with a huge pot of dye!
Well, believe it or not, the average home than had a small collection of several different colors of dyes on their pantry shelf. It was used all of the time. I think what happened is people were more of the mind you don’t throw anything out so to make those red towels look nice in your purple bathroom you would dye them to match. You wouldn’t dream of getting rid of them and buying more just to make everything match.
Now, if a pair of pants fades we just toss them or wear them faded. I love and wear a lot of black so I do my black pants, skirts, t-shirts and Bob’s black socks that have turned blue.
I figure if I can’t wear the item except around the house anyway, so what do I have to lose if I ruin it. Though, it really is hard to ruin anything. Dye is so easy to use. I would start simple like buy a box to dye all of your navy or black things. Follow the instructions on the package but they basically say to dissolve the dye, dump it in the machine with some salt, wash and dry. You can hand dye things too. It is about as easy as doing a load of laundry. I usually run the washer thru an empty cycle after.
If you are throwing those pants away because they are faded, try dyeing them and see what happens. Dye isn’t expensive. I use my Jo Ann Fabrics coupon and get it for about half price ($1.25). You can get it at Wal Mart and even some dollar stores or grocery stores.
GRANDMA'S CURES from Sherry
Did You Know that drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately-- without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional 'pain relievers.'
Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey & take 1 tablespoon, six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.
